By the mid of 20th century the diesel engine powered locomotives have become the dominant type of locomotives in much of the world, offering greater flexibility and performance , substantially lower operating and maintenance costs than the the steam engine driven locomotives. Currently, almost all diesel locomotives are powered by diesel-electric engine.
